Artist Residency

About

There is no application fee.  Inquiries accepted on a rolling basis.

Residencies are typically four weeks in length and include a $500 honorarium, $250 travel stipend, $250 art material stipend, and living accommodations in an apartment attached to a large studio space.  Residencies are hosted between the months of April - November.

Our facility, OSMOS Station, offers artists an opportunity to work and live in Stamford during the duration of their residency. A former truck garage located right off the Catskill Scenic Trail and adjacent to the village’s former train depot, the building has been renovated to include a two story apartment for housing, which is connected to a 1000 square foot studio/exhibition space with soaring 17 foot ceilings. The residency typically culminates with a final public exhibition and reception. During the residency, artists are also provided curatorial and production support. ARTS&REC offers artistic guidance; networking opportunities with local fabricators, artists, and art industry professionals; studio visits with collectors; and promotion and marketing of their work and in support of their final exhibition.

Residency Location

Stamford, NY, located 3 hours northwest of New York City in the Catskill Mountains, has been a destination town since the 1870s. Once known as the "Queen of the Catskills," visitors rode the passenger train north to escape the city heat and spend the summer in the cool mountain air. Since then, it is still a year-round destination with a beautiful and growing arts community. Enjoy live music and performance, as well as outdoor adventures such as a trip to Mount Utsayantha to climb the fire tower, or bike riding on the Catskill Scenic Trail.

Stamford is a bucolic town with a population of 1,200 people, so there aren't taxi services, but the studio is right in the heart of town and everything essential (grocery store, pharmacy, coffee shops, restaurants, bars, public pool and gym) is within walking distance from OSMOS Station.  To travel to or from NYC, there is a Trailways bus stop on Main St. in Stamford, or you can take an Amtrak train from Hudson, which is an hour drive from Stamford.

Youth Art Workshops

ARTS&REC offers art workshops for youths aged 9-15 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the month of July.

These programs are offered at no cost! Those who are able are encouraged to make a donation on-site. Participants are welcome to sign up for any number of days.

Registration is on a first come first serve basis. Contact programs@artsrec.org for inquiries.

Experienced artists and educators have been invited to teach in a range of disciplines, including, but not limited to: photography, silk screen, cyanotype, watercolor, sculpture, painting & patchwork, collage, and weaving.

Each day’s morning session will be from 10am to 12pm followed by a midday break and the afternoon session from 1pm to 3pm.. We ask participants to provide their own lunch. Snacks and water will be provided throughout the day.

Nordic Nights

Throughout the winter, ARTS&REC hosts a series of evening cross-country skiing meetups on the Catskill Scenic Trail. These events are free and open to the public. All skill levels are welcome: equipment and a PSIA certified ski instructor will be available to attendees. Bring a headlamp and let’s hit the trail!

Given that these events are weather dependent, please follow us on Instagram or Facebook to hear about upcoming dates.
