Ira Lupu

Open Studio

In residence -

Opening May 24, 2025, 2-4pm

Ira Lupu weaves documentary and partially-directed personal photography in an archive of wartime experiences in her home country of Ukraine. Despite the difficult realities she and her contemporaries experience, she finds dreamy and intimate moments which shine through.

As artist-in-residence with Arts&Rec in the Western Catskills of Stamford, New York, Lupu has been spending the past month examining and getting to know the region intimately.

Ira Lupu is a photographer and visual artist born and raised in Odesa, Ukraine, and based in New York City. In her practice, the metaphorical and dreamy collide with the human worlds researched with forensic attention. Her work explores notions of intimacy, connection and disconnection, trauma, and ownership of the gaze.

Lupu has exhibited at Manifesta Biennial, Christie’s London and Paris, Wembley Park, and the Copenhagen Photo Festival, among others. Her work has been supported by Magnum Photos, Aperture, and Google. It is in the collections of Ethan Cohen Gallery, New York, Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht. and Van Every/Smith Galleries, Davidson. She has participated in panels and talks with Magnum Photos, the Piedmontese Institute for the History of the Resistance, the Tim Hetherington Trust, and Miami University.

A member of Diversify.Photo, Women Photograph, and Kintzing, Ira is represented on Artsy.com through Darling Pearls & Co gallery, London. She graduated from the International Center of Photography, New York, and Viktor Marushchenko’s School of Photography, Kyiv.
